The croque monsieur is a classic comfort food that captures the essence of French cuisine, offering a simple yet luxurious dining experience that is sure to leave you craving more

Ingredients:
  • 4 slices of white bread
  • 4 slices of ham
  • 1 cup of shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Once melted, add the flour and stir continuously for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.
  3. Slowly pour in the milk while whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Cook the sauce until it thickens and becomes smooth.
  4. Season the sauce with nutmeg, salt, and pepper, and continue whisking for another minute. Remove from heat and set aside.
  5. Take two slices of bread and spread a generous amount of the béchamel sauce on one side of each slice.
  6. Layer a slice of ham on top of the sauce on one slice of bread, followed by a handful of shredded Gruyere cheese. Top with the other slice of bread, sauce side down.
  7. Repeat the same process with the remaining two slices of bread, ham, and cheese.
  8. Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 10-12 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. If desired, you can broil the sandwiches for an additional 1-2 minutes to get a golden, crispy crust.
  10. Remove from the oven, let them cool for a minute, and then slice each sandwich in half diagonally.
  11. Serve hot and enjoy the delightful flavors of the Croque Monsieur!

Note: For a twist, you can also add a fried egg on top of each sandwich, transforming it into a Croque Madame. Simply fry two eggs sunny-side up and place one on each sandwich before serving. Magnifique!
